Hello Guys^^

Im thinking about upgrading my MBP's harddrive to 500 GB's.
I've found several 500 drives but I got no idea which one to take xD

Fujitsu
Hitachi
Western Digital
Seagate

I heard one of them was too big for the MBP.. I think it was the Hitachi...
Well, which one should I buy? Anyone got one of those? Are they quiet? Noisier than the standart Apple one?

Thank yoou!

Just got the Samsung 500gb drive as well!

I've got the previous gen MBP (Early '08, MBP 4,1) & was just wondering if there wondering if there would be any issues if i were to bring the drive in to the Apple store to have something replaced like, say the superdrive or the logic board.

Or would they not care so long as i didn't break anything while swapping the drive around?

Samsung OEM package

I put one of the Samsungs into my MBP Unibody (late 2008) and it is doing fine.
Quite and as quick at the original.

Check out NewEgg, SAMSUNG Spinpoint M6 HM500LI 500GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - OEM.

OEM package for $109.

im also curious which is the best. i definately need to upgrade but was wondering if i would be seeing a huge difference in actual speed going from a 320gb 7200 drive to a 500gb 5400 drive? anyone?

^ it seems like you'd be upgrading space-wise, but downgrading speed-wise :D

...so 36% denser platters spinning 25% slower? I'm a L.A. major, you do the math :p

I got a 500GB WD few month back and its been absolutely perfect. Extremely quiet and produces much less heat then the old 160GB Hitachi that came w/ the MBP.

You'd maybe tell a difference speed wise if the 320 gig drive was starting to fill up. Otherwise, you'd be seeing a decrease in speed, not an increase.

Unless you're working with extremely huge files where you need as fast read/write speeds as possible, go with the 500GB 5400. The difference speed wise isn't as significant as the size difference.

Not wanting to quibble, but I can tell a difference in boot up, cold application launches and file transfers. But wanting to get 180 more gigs would be a valid choice, too.

Oh, found some good benchmark results in tom's hardware web page.

Samsung M6 worked like a dream in my MBP until it stolen. Highly recommended, will buy the same when insurance finally comes through.

also a vote for samsung 500gb. the reputed low heat is for real... noticeable difference definitely

To everyone who has said they're using the Samsung - have you noticed any increased noise? That's the knock I've been reading about that drive, that it's noisier. It's the only thing that's stopped me from buying it. Is it noticeable?

I upgraded my stock drive to a 320GB hitachi and it's been awesome and silent. I want to make the jump to 500GB at some point soon, but noise and vibration is a deal breaker.

Nope no noisier than the stock drive that came with it, for me at least

What about the 500gb WD Scorpio blue, I was thinking about it as an upgrade to the 320gb in mine. Anyone have any experience with it?
