I am wondering if someone technically minded can explain how the new 64 bit architecture will affect the battery performance, specifically on intensive applications such as 3D gaming and Augmented Reality.

Will the battery drain faster or slower in these cases?

Even if its 32-bit or 64-bit, if you run these types of intensive apps then the battery life is going to drain fast either way.

The efficiency of the circuitry and software are key to battery consumption. Small architecture of the chip, even at 64bit, will use less power.

I would bet the 5s and 5 will be close to the same with increased performance of the 5s but only time will tell.

It will run more hot under gaming, means it will drain faster. They managed to doubled the transistors count inside the A7, in trade for heat of course. Simpler task that doesn't need constant gpu or cpu work though will be executed faster to achieve idle state faster to save battery.
