Could the unibody MBP support 2 19" monitors? Would I have to buy a Display port to DVI, and then a DVI splitter?

you cannot attach two external displays. You can only use the built in display + a single external. It only has 1 video out port.

You can use USB to DVI or USB to VGA connectors but I wouldn't recommend that.

It's still just one external display then. You can attempt to use USB display solutions but keep in mind the lack of any acceleration and limited OS X support to begin with.

Ok thanks. Ill just get one large external display then.

You can't have 2 external monitors each doing their own thing. You could have the MBP monitor and then another external one that together compose one "big" monitor.

But no, you can't have the macbook and then two external monitors plugged in doing their own thing. You could have 2 external monitors showing the same thing, if you had to present stuff or something like that.

Those solutions make the 2 or more screens into one, but allow separate things on each display.

The VillageTronic gfxDock makes add'l monitors into discreet monitors (normal behavior), while the Matrox makes add'l monitors into a single canvas.

The ExpressCard solution is passable but the price isn't going to be nice.

I haven't seen any sort of hardware acceleration available on USB options yet.

wow the gfx dock is $500 and can support two additional screens
and the matrox one can support two or three respectivly at $100 and $200.

but the gfx dock does sound better if the other displays are able to each individually be seen.

Yes possible.

USB dongle, no graphics acceleration = fairly cheap
Express card with graphics acceleration = expensive

You might want to just buy a 24". Much better than two 19".

The ViDock unfortunately is not compatible with the new unibody MacBook Pros. I actually contacted them to find this out, because I would like to buy a new MacBook Pro and attach two 20" displays to it plus another display through the displayport. Sounds kind of weird, but I would like it for work.

This is the response I received:

Hello Tim,

Currently ViDock Gfx is not compatible with the third or fifth generation of MacBook Pro systems.
The issues are related to the Apple system Firmware and we are working with Apple to ensure compatibility throughout the line.

Also have a look at our USB to DVI cable, ViBook. Though a little less performant (up to 1600x1200 resolution), it's supported by more systems, including your MacBook Pro generation 5 (and all MacOS X notebooks and even desktops). It is easy to install and use, and to carry around.

Just a question though, has anyone used the USB to DVI solution and if so how well does it work?
