Slow screen refresh on new iPhone 3G - scrolling not smooth

I thought there was something odd about the display on my iPhone 3G, I previously had an iPod touch 1G and 2G, anyway I put my finger on it last night...

When scrolling the screen is not smooth it's like it is interlaced or has too lower refresh rate, best place to see this is the settings menu, when scrolling the horizontal line between the items sort of goes light as you scroll the screen .

It is very odd, and as I said my iPod touch did not do this and neither does my wife's iPhone 3G, I did a lot of searching last and could not find any mention of my issue via MacRumors, Apple Support or Google.

Anyone else seen this or know a solution before I have to drive a 60 mile round trip back to the Apple store?

Software updated to 2.2.1 on day of purchase + I have tried reset and restore, also I note my wife's iPhone is not perfectly smooth on the settings screen, but the divider line stays gray whereas mine looks like it flickers on and off as you scroll.

I would take both back to where ever you got them if a restore didn't fix it.

Does anyone else see this issue?

This is already my 2nd iPhone 3G, first had a deal pixel.

Software or hardware is my question, as static picture is excellent, it's only scrolling that is odd.
 
Was your iPhone cold? If it was then it was normal, but try not to have it happen a lot.

LCD screens do that all the time when they get cold. If I take my phone mountain biking, when I get back the refresh rate will be really slow on the screen, like it's lagging or freezing (literally!). The LCD on my car stereo does that in the winter also, it will have like trails and stuff. I guess the liquid in the screen is cooling so it's thicker and slower.

So the big question is, was your iPhone cold?!
If it was then just let it warm up and it'll be fine.

Warm as far as I know, did a lot of browsing around looking into this in Safari so if it started cold it was warm by the time I finished...

But to be sure I am just warming between by legs and I will post back.
 
Right defiantly warm now and it's still the same...

I am really annoyed, as I said it's already my 2nd iPhone 3G...

Does not give me any confidence in quality control, wish I had noticed before the 2.2.1 update - as it could be software only.

The picture when static is perfect, but not if you scroll...

I cannot be the only person who is seeing this?

Please people try the Settings menu and scroll it, do your grey dividing lines almost flicker on/off as you scroll?

Try closing all pages in Safari and making an untitled blank page. When you close Safari, this will force quit it and it will not be running in the background. This may help.

As I said I have tried resetting and also restoring it, so I think that covers having nothing running... but I don't think Safari is allowed to run in the background anyway.

BTW I did try this and it made no difference...

Am I really the only person who sees this?

Looks like I will have to go back to the Apple store then, plenty to test there before I speak to someone...

I really wanted this to be software, but I suppose it could be a faulty graphics chip.

Well, Safari is one of the 3 apps that runs in the background. If you restored from a backup, I believe this reopens the pages in Safari. Since you tried this, take it to an Apple Store. I would take your Wife's too while your there, if your having any problems with that one too. Believe me, it's a great product and some people just aren't lucky and get a faulty one.:( Once you have one that works good, I'm sure you'll love it!

Aha I see what you mean, but only if I move the menu as slowly as possible. Get the same effect on iPod touch (first gen) too.

I am glad someone else sees, but if you say you have to move as slowly as possible I am not sure you are seeing the same thing... Granted it's worse when you move it slower, but still it looks like horizontal lines get fainter if you move faster, whereas slow it almost looks like they flick on / off.

I will be visiting the Apple store on Monday, hopefully if this is deemed to be an issue they will just swap, again, as it's less than 1 week old.

Apart from that I love my iPhone, way better than the iPod touch!
 
Right I have been and spoken to an Apple Genius and his iPhone 3G was the same as mine, so were all the iPhone's and iPod touch's I looked at in the store...

So this is either a software issue or they have changed the quality of their components...

I am surprised noone else has noticed this.
