Extracting files out of iPhone backup?

Can you extract files out of a backup? I restored my phone, not from a backup, and need to recover notes and some songs out of 4 track. I suppose I could put the Backup back on there, transfer, and then re-restore, but I'd like to avoid it. Thanks!

Did you ever think of just backing them up by syncing them to your computer, so you're not just relying on your phone?
