All of my music has been stored on an external HDD in a folder: itunes/itunesmusic/

I've gone into Edit, Preferences, Advanced and told it that my I Tunes Music Location is: f:/itunes/itunesmusic

But when I open Itunes, I still don't see my songs. I don't want copies of my songs stored on my computer (which is what I think will happen if I "consolidate")

Any suggestions?

having music on an external drive does cause iTunes the odd issue - instead of telling it where the new location is in Preferences - which case it may get confused by the switch, or equally, if you forget to turn the external on before you open iTunes, it will default to the default: Music/iTunes/iTunes Music anyways, which is annoying...

put the music where it was, so the iTunes Library opens and works as expected.
Shut iTunes
Move the music to some other folder on the external
Create an alias of that folder
Delete the Music/iTunes/iTunes Music folder
Rename the alias to 'iTunes Music' and put it in Music/iTunes

then .. when you restart iTunes, it looks for the music files in the normal place, and gets cunningly redirected to the new place. The same thing happens when you import new music etc

You shouldn't have copied the files to the new location, you should've let iTunes move them using the "Consolidate" function.
