I use Handbrake for ripping and Burn for burning. There's no reason to use commercial software for such simple tasks these days.
 
Even though I use the current version of Mac The Ripper (3.0 r14m) myself normally, I have tried the newest release of RipIt a few times recently and did quite well for backing up some of my recent purchases, so the download trial would well be worth your time. RipIt is admirable in its simplicity- and as long as you go into the preferences and make sure "Use .dvdmedia Extension" is unchecked it rips to a standard VIDEO_TS folder just like Mac The Ripper.
