as i saw it for 3 bucks a 12 pack. I was like dang thats a good price

then i check out and see there is this 60 cent NY DEP Fee added BEFORE the sales tax. WTF is this ****?

This state is getting uncooler by the second

£1.50 for 12 fizzy drinks? That's not too bad. A 6 pack of Coca Cola is £2 at my local corner shop.

So, they give you the tax back on the deposit too?

(Assuming the OP was correct, and the deposit value was also included in the tax calculation, and not just printed above it.) ;)

The deposit isn't taxed, it just appears first on the receipt as a matter of style.

Not that half the people remember to deposit their cans anyway; most of the time, they recycle them in public receptacles and never get the money back.

I think my family would be in the poor house if they started doing the deposits on soda cans. We drink way too much soda :D

The price for soda anywhere is ridiculous; to save my health and wallet I have made soda a weekend only expense and switched to teas during the week.

I just paid $5.99 for a 24 pack of Coke at Shaw's here in New England.

I still call it "Pop." :D

I'm guessing you are not originally from New England. No native New Englander I know uses "pop". Near Boston it is "tonic" (said like a true Bostonian) everywhere else it is "soda". The nearest place I've heard "pop" was Buffalo.

You are correct. I'm from Michigan.

When I say Pop people look at me like I have 2 heads.

Has the state gotten any closer to their proposed extra tax on non-diet sodas? I heard the idea floated around here in Massachusetts since then. Thanks NY for coming up with that idea! That would just add one more thing to wait and get in New Hampshire (along with gasoline if the new tax goes through making MA higher than even California and Connecticut).

Geez, Coke (Coca-Cola) was $5.19 for a 12 pack the other day. And that was with my Kroger Plus Card! Blasphemy!
Time for generic pop.

problm with generic soda is that you cant get near the diet variety:(

out west everyone calls it pop
down south, its soda or "coke"

at least from my experience living in those regions

We like to keep an eye on you "foreigners" in our territory :D

With our accents, it isn't hard for others to keep track of us when we leave New England :p

Let's see if Coupe DeVal gets his way and gets the tax on flavored water passed. That'll go over real well...
Never heard "pop" used here in reference to soda...

price of soda fluctuates more than gas does lol

i just dont get that fee imposed....

You don't get what a deposit is? It means when you return the containers for recycling you get a full refund of the deposit you paid when you purchased the soda/beer.

It is designed to encourage recycling, but most states that feature such programs only apply it to carbonated beverages (soda, some energy drinks, beer, wine coolers). These policies need to be updated because of the prevalence of bottled water, bottled milk, sports drinks, and juices. In fact, I'd like to see a ~$0.25+ deposit applied to non-beverage containers. THOSE are the ones that are HUGE, contain chemical residue, and seem to be recycled very infrequently (i.e. detergent, bleach, liquid soap, hair care bottles, household cleaners, etc.)

If you are overweight (I guess even if you are not) we want you drinking diet soda. But heaven forbid you actively do something to work the weight off. We have to discourage that practice right-quick.

From the midwest on I've heard pop, except in the South as well. Kind of weird to order a Coke and get asked "what kind?". I was ordering a Coke to forestall any "pop" vs "soda" vs "tonic" misunderstandings in the first place. So as not to sound like I stuttered, I just replied "Sprite".
