Hey guys.

Will Crysis 2 run without lag in ultra high setting all shadow etc maxed out on the 6770M on the 21" high end model?

Thanks

You can probably run it at High (lowest setting) at 1600x900 pretty well.

Hmm it will not lag or not playable :p

Cause those are different, by much hahaha

at the sort of resolutions even the 21.5" imacs run at nativly, the 512mb video ram just wont cut it when you turn on all the effects, this is the single biggest bottleneck to performance at native resolution on the 21.5" imacs, you run into the ram limitation before you max out the video cards capabilities.

A 1GB card would be supurb....

im hoping to be able to source mac spare parts one day, and try fitting the 27" 2GB into the 21.5" as the cards are removable..

Apple should really have given the 21.5" a build to order option of a 1GB for the video cards.

It won´t fit. The HD6970m has a different heatsink that wont fit in the 21" model and the heatsink of a 21" graphics card(HD6750/HD6770 or older) doesn´t fit on the HD6970.
The heatsing of the HD6970m uses 3 heatpipes where all other graphics cards use 2 (even the older high end models) + the baseplate is bigger because the HD6970m is an annex b mxm module thats larger then the mxm a module graphics cards used in the 21" model.

And i have doubts the cooling space in the 21" will be sufficient for a GPU as powerfull as the HD6970.

Well i haven´t tried this myself.I have done some extensive research on this matter myself. It would make the 21" a really nice gaming mac.

i calculated a 2600K i7, 8GB 1333MHz, 1TB 7200RPM and a 6970 2GB desktop will cost around pretty much the same as a high end 21"

well...

i'm going to start building it

must build own PC now

So you spend 12 hours day playing a game? And it has to be "high res"?

And thats the only thing you are going to do on your computer? No email? or web? No photos? Just playing a game all day?

How much money do you make doing that?

Are you pulling information out of thin air, or did the OP state this elsewhere?

Dude, he wants to play games on high settings, don't hate him for that. The price difference between an iMac that can play that and a custom PC must be pretty significant. Lots of people have custom PCs for gaming on., I do not:)

If you are going to build your own, at least build an hackintosh.

it is going to be hackintosh. but with a Win7 partition

What's it matter to you, are you offended he's not getting a Mac or something? The guy wants great graphics from his game. Big deal. He has a hobby and wants it to be great.

Also, yeah because you can't surf the web, email, or do photos on a PC. No, that's Mac exclusive.

does anybody have a benchmark and the clock speed of the 6770M 512MB?\

if 512MB GDDR5 is not enough will the GPU just swap to disk like RAM?

because if i get SSD that will make swap process fast

OOT:

system breakdown

i7 2600K 3.1GHz
USB 3.0 Air cooled motherboard
6MB L3 Cache
bluetooth 2,1
a b g n wifi all channel
8GB 1333MHz
500GB 7200RPM
AMD Radeon 6970 2GB GDDR5 Desktop edition
17" 1080p screen
webcam (720P)
10 bucks copy of Win7
Hackintosh 10.6.7
apple wired keyboard, simbadda windows keyboard
razer mouse

1480$

hmmm interesting, cost just about the same

hope this will finish end of the year if i'm not too lazy

A 6970 2GB is pointless with a 1080 screen, huge overkill either save money by getting a more modest GPU or get a higher res screen. TBH a 6950 would make more sense, very powerful, cheaper and will usually unlock to a full 6970.

6950 with 2GB GDDR5?

wait,by unlock u mean overclock right?

ok, can get link please? :D

Got to laugh, sorry, air cooled usb 3.0 motherboard :p

Also i hate your build setup.

17" monitor, really? Thats laptop size.
No ssd?
2gb 6970 on a 17" monitor? Really? Overkill. You can easily flash the 6950 to a 6970 anyways.

Get a z68 board, a sandy bridge cpu, you dont need the i7 if you dont alot of video editing etc. a stylish case (ie fractal r3), vertex 3 ssd, and go from there

so i always need a watercooled if i use USB 3.0?
17" is quite enough imo
no, SSD is pointless on a desktop, unless u have a lot of money
HOOOOW? HOW DO I FLASH A 6950 TO 6970 SPEED?

thx

Click here. Be warned though that the mod was originally released for reference designed 6950's. They are become harder to find as manufacturers are opting to use custom cooling soutions. A quick scan of New Egg lists ONE(!) reference design card in stock. YMMV with unlocking them.

Edit: I was successful in unlocking a pair of Sapphire Cards in my W7 gaming rig.

The 6970 desktop only gets ~40 FPS in Metro 2033 max'd at 1200p with AAA. I'd hardly say that's overkill. If you look at games like The Witcher 2 it won't even be able to max that I'd guess, especially with Uber Sampling turned on.

"because if i get SSD that will make swap process fast"

No, swapping will still be incredibly slow. SSD speed is nowhere near as fast as actual RAM.

"USB 3.0 Air cooled motherboard"

This is not a motherboard. No motherboard is advertised as "Air cooled".

Any good motherboard will cost at least $200, all of which come with USB 3.0.

"17" 1080p screen"

I don't even think you can still buy 17" monitors, especially not a 1080p 17" monitor.

"i7 2600K 3.1GHz"

There is no 2600K 3.1GHz, the 2600K is 3.4GHz and not worth getting over the standard 2600 unless you plan on overclocking. Which you can't with Mac OS X.

"6MB L3 Cache"

Are you planning on buying L3 cache separately? lol. The 2600K comes with 8MB of L3 Cache.

"apple wired keyboard, simbadda windows keyboard"

You don't need two separate keyboards. Pick the better keyboard and use it for both Windows and Mac.

"10 bucks copy of Win7"

I seriously doubt you can legally get a copy of Windows 7 for $10.

"AMD Radeon 6970 2GB GDDR5 Desktop edition"

If you're running a hackintosh, you're going to need find custom drivers to use the 6970 desktop card. As far as I know, there aren't drivers for the 6970. Also as other people have said, You can buy a 6950 (only certain brands work) and flash it into a 6970 for less if you must have one.

"500GB 7200RPM"

Only 500GB? That is way too small. Put at least a 1TB drive in it.

As for the price you listed. That is a very low estimate.

oh okay, then i need a 2GB video RAM

i mean a motherboard that does not support watercool, it's cheaper

well, i can look for other monitors

oh, i thought 3.4 is the turbo boost?

i didn't know thta, i just i didn't read thoroughly at newegg description

i can

Win7 in my country is sold for 10 bucks, no kid

i don't need 500GB

um yeah i misestimated the price, for a good casing and cables and speaker it would cost 1900$, which is near a 27" imac high end (2100$ right?)
