That looks horrible. The elements might be aranged the same way..but the interface is just butt-ugly.

I think it looks good. I mean really, all lindows is a dumbed down look-a-like version of Windows. Hey, this allow PC's to go for 289 bucks, can't knock a company that is trying to make sure everyone, rich or poor, can afford a computer if he or she wants. Hell I might just go to walmart and get a Lindows machine for the hell of it.

I support Linux and OSS software -- especially in the Linux desktop sector which I hope grows a lot in the next couple of years -- but this practice of ripping off proprietary software interfaces is extremely obnoxious. Lphoto and Lsongs could have been designed to have any type of interface, but the choice was made to emulate Apple's design -- all the way down to the button placement. Even the some of the icons are the same. Too bad the UI theme isn't the same...then it wouldn't be butt-ugly. ;)

I love how companies like Apple can pay hundreds of people to spend huge amounts of time to develop great interfaces and software features, only to see that work poorly cloned by a handful of OSS geeks. Um, what's wrong with this picture?

Ahh, continuing the tradition of copying of Apple, poorly.

My wonder is if the Linux community wants this stuff so bad, why don't they just get macs in the first place? And don't give me that "they're too expensive" crap anymore - I want real reasons.

Umm they are still too expensive. Maybe you have money coming out of your ass but not everyone does. It took me years to be able to afford a Mac. And besides, the linux users who aren't obsessed with everything being free and open source and who do have they money have already switched. The rest never will.

and it took exactly 1 post to bring up cost. I mean I want different reasons - there are plenty of opportunities to get macs at lower costs. I'm looking more for the "linux is more fun" or "linux is better for the environment" or "linux keeps my roommate from using my computer" or "linux keeps the RIAA away" or "linux cleans the inside of the toilet bowl." I want positives in favor of linux, not negatives against macs.

and for the record, I have one of the older computers on these boards that I use as a daily machine, and I haven't upgraded it because of cost. But the fact remains that if I really NEEDED a new mac, there are plenty of options for financing that make them obtainable to me.

Couldn't this be seen as a form of flattery? iTunes is a pretty nice app, and everyone knows they are not going to port to Linux, so why not make a clone?

Linux runs on the machines people already have. That's not just a cost thing, but convenience too.

If there are Windows programs that can't yet be ditched, they can be run at full speed using dual booting, wine, vmware/VPC and so on. Ever try to run AutoCAD under a software-only emulator? It's... amusing.

There aren't any Macs that will slide into a dashboard, or other unusual small places. No handheld Macs either.

Linux is perceived as not belonging to Large Corporations (ignore that IBM rep behind the curtain!). Sure, Apple put their core OS under a liberal license too, but that's seen by many as more of a marketing ploy without the same sort of, er, street cred, or something. That's a very different kind of "cool factor" than Apple has, but it's very real to those who care about it.

There are more things to do for those who like to fart around with their computers for the sake of farting around with their computers. Apple already figured out most of the hard stuff on their products, where's the challenge?

maybe I missed something when watching the flash demos of Lsongs and Lphoto. but I wonder if sharing would work between Lsongs and iTunes, and Lphoto and iPhoto. if it doesn't already work maybe someone will come up with a way to make it.

anyway, the application clones are not cool at all. as far as the price concerns, it's not a huge challenge to get a refurbished eMac for $499.

Yes, a refurb emac for $499 or a far faster Linspire PC from walmart for $249 or whatever it is.

Of course, Linspire is a terrible OS. The only thing I like about it is the financial support that they give to the Linux community.

Also, look at their website. It's SO FUGLY!!! Do they have a 13 year old photoshop kid sitting round doing their webpages?

Here's the truth.

First Let me say I love macs, some of apples products are amoung the best availible...but some of you mac fanboys totaly make me laugh.

Here's my 2 cents

One thing that has kept my kids from using Linux (and in some cases mac) is the avilible software (music, games etc.) Kids want P2P and they want music stores and Linux was short on both issues.

Now the Linux "L-tunes" may not be as good looking as I-Tunes but its not "Butt ugly". Some mac fanboys will come in and try to kick down anything not mac a few notches just because it makes them feel better about their (perhaps over priced and under spec'ed mac purchase).

As far as prices I'm very happy to see mac prices have fallen on the lower end units but to my "gamer son" picking a lower priced under speced mac laptop compared to a simular priced PC laptop that can play doom3 (even on lower settings) is a no brainer....the pc would win.

Apple knows it has a good thing going with the ipod sales and I believe thats the market they are the most scared of loosing.

But it's butt ugly. It really is. It was the first thing I noticed wen I saw the butt-ugly thing appear on my screen. Because I happen to use iTunes and iPhoto doesn't mean I don't have capacity to know when something looks like it was made by a partially sighted monkey and a screen capture of iTunes.

Yes it is a no-brainer. So why bring it up? Who cares? Go buy a PC. Use Lindows. Have fun playing Doom 3.

I agree the itunes screen does look cleaner and better but it doesn't mean that for linux the L-tunes is all that bad. Linux has been in need a music store and I would perfer to see this and some Linux only site that has even less than this "copy".
