6GB on a new Macbook Pro 13?

Hello guys,

I'm going to buy the new Macbook Pro 13. It comes with 4Gb (2x2GB) but since I use lots of apps + VMWare Fusion I'd like to upgrade it to 6GB. I would replace 1x2Gb stick by a 1x4GB, having in total 6GB (1x2GB, 1x4GB). Do you think it's ok? Will it work?

I found this memory on Newegg and it's pretty cheap ($115):

What do you think guys?

Thanks

I think the difference is too small from 4 ---> 6

Look and keep an eye out for cheap 2x4GB sticks. The full 8GB will probably be more worth it.

I would get whatever you can afford now. An extra 2Gb on top of the 4 gig would help for VMware. I find myself constantly low in memory after a day or so of activity --clear caches of Safari and Firefox, then relaunch them, and I usually free up at least half a gig.

4Gb isn't what it used to be.

Yeah, exactly... this is why I want 6GB. I constantly see my Mac with only 500MB free (while using VMWare + Chrome + many other apps) and things start to slow down. If I had 6GB it would be much better.

I can even buy another 4GB later.. but for now, this is what I can do.

Going back to the main question, will I have problems with the memory above (see link)? This is my doubt. I'd like to buy it today! :)

Thanks guys

Thats not really the correct memory. You want PC8500 1066MHz with a CAS 7. And OCZ makes terrible memory.

Wait until this is back in stock instead

Might want to do a bit of research first. It looks like it is okay to do what you are proposing, but not without some issues.

I have always looked at RAM in that you want matching sticks of the same size for optimum performance.

I understand I won't be able to use dual channel and "lose" 8%, 10% of performance, but in my situation I'd rather to have 50% more memory available on my mac.

The memory suggested above by kny3twalker seems to work well with the original 2GB.. I read a review of another guy doing the same thing.

I'll give a try. If it doesn't work I just return it.

Thank you all.

Thank you guys for the response. I'll buy it.. just waiting for those memories become available again.

I'll post the results later next week.
