It always seems like the home button retains smudges and fingerprints way more than the home screen. Is your experience similar as well? It's particularly apparent on my space gray phone.

Isn't the Touch ID supposed to have oleophobic costing as well?

I have to agree, I get a lot of smudges and it drives me crazy.

I don't know too much about it, but I know the home button is sapphire crystal and it reflects light a lot more than the glass of the display. Sapphire crystal is a lot more reflective. So maybe that has something to do with it.

I doubt they coat the Saphire as the coating is not as hard as the Saphire and would scratch. And as someone else mentioned, Saphire is more reflective, so more noticeable.

As for driving Saphiria crazy, a hobby, or worthwhile cause to take your mind off it might help. Carry a microcloth to wipe it, or a hammer to hit your thumb each time you view it. Won't be long before you stop looking. Don't want you going crazy over it. ;)

It doesn't drive me crazy (far from it in fact) but I have noticed the screen and button get about the same amount of fingerprints.
