Since taking 7.3.1 on the Apple Watch and the latest iOS (14.4) on my 12 pro Max I get the best battery life on the watch i have ever seen.
Heavy notification and other usage, although AOD off I get 48 ours with 10-15% left. If it wasn't for the new feature to unlock your phone from your watch coming in next release i would stay on this one forever or at least a looong time.
For the phone i experience the opposite. I used to get almost 3 days and now i don't even get 2 days and that is with light use.
And yes it has been updated several weeks ago so any indexing is done. I have no update running in the background etc.

is it just me having much less battery life on my 12 pro Max with 14.4? Up until i got the new release i was amazed with the battery life now i am less impressed to say the least..

No issues with my 12 Pro Max running 14.4, smashing my phone every day, heavy usage, can easily get 9-10 hours usage with some battery remaining.
