7+ not using telephoto lens

How exactly does this work? I tried 6 different photos.

1x with wide-angle covered and I saw nothing
2x with wide-angle covered and the same
10x exact same as above

1x with telephoto covered and saw the photo
2x same as above
10x again the same

When does the phone actually use the telephoto lens?

Sigh. There's a bunch of posts like this already and their not hard to find...

The camera doesn't switch if there're not enough light. If it used the "optical" zoom in low light the picture would end up looking horrible. So instead it use the first camera and digital zoom
