The fossil remains of a gigantic rodent that looked something like a monster guinea pig have been identified by scientists in Venezuela.

The 700-kilogram beast - about the size of a buffalo - lived among the reeds and grasses of an ancient river system that threaded its way into the Caribbean Sea eight million years ago.

Researchers think the creature, which was 10 times as big as today's largest rodents, could have run in huge packs.

The discovery of "Guinea-zilla", as some have already dubbed it, is reported in the journal Science.

Hoo-ah!

I think that children of this giant rat moved north through the years and finally settled in the NYC subway system. We have a few monsters down there...:)

A trully interesting find. Seems that it ended up being too big for its own good.

Where do you think the politicians came from?

I haven't read that noews around here, I may be too bussy.

Now if they had a fire swamp there the R.O.U.S. (rodents of unusual size) probably wouldn't have died out :p

On Anquilla, the past home of the largest rodent - from about 125,000 years ago, had 6 inch teeth....I wonder how big these were....

D

Maybe rats of that size wouldn't bother humans. We could always hope. They certainly would not be as mobile in a city!
