iPod 700mb-avi or dvd?

Hi there!

I got a question and I don't know if it is a stupid one...

well anyway, here's my problem:

I converted a lot of my dvds to 700 mb avi-files.
Is there a difference in quality when I encode from a 700 mb-file or straight from dvd when I play it on my ipod?

would be so great if somebody would help me here, would save so much time to just use the avi-files instead of encoding all my dvds again!
