I use Paintbrush for my casual cheap-looking picture editing needs

Another vote for Paintbrush.

Paintbrush is good, I used to use it. However, the current version has a color bug that the developer knows about and will fix in 2.1.

These days I use GraphicConverter, which isn't free, but is perfectly usable in demo mode, if you don't need the batch features.

google the mac application called "pencil" I think itll be your best bet.
