Ohio - GO BUCKEYES!
So, I've been using my new Apple Watch for 72 hours. I have to say that the watch is beautifully crafted and the technology is amazing. I'm truly impressed with the battery life after all that I've read. I have not turned on the LTE, because I want to make sure that I'll be keeping the watch. My only issue is that I'm terrified that I'll break the Sapphire Crystal. I've read about so many accidents and the ridiculous cost to repair, that I'm too paranoid to relax and enjoy the experience.

You should get Applecare+ for the watch. You are covered for 2 incidents of accidental damage over the course of 2 years so that should remove some fear of breaking the crystal.

I think you're right jwzimm!

Definitely second that recommendation for Apple Care, I got it for my Nike+ Series 3, I wanted the SS but I just really wanted the Nike+ more, so with the Ion-X I know am going to crack and scratch my screen because I am just very active and I know that's just going to happen, so it's nice to have that assurance.

Interesting... Double AW home here, I have had mine for a year and my better half has had his for two years. They are just the cheap sport watches but I am not aware of a scratch or damage on either one. We do have screen protectors (glass) and bumpers on them, but the very thin, discrete kind that blend in. I might not want something like that on a SS AW though, hmm, food for thought.

I had my Series 1 for almost a year and worked in a pretty rough environment and only had light scuffs when I upgraded to my Series 3.

What sort of work do you do? I think you'd be surprised at the durability of these things. I've always felt that AppleCare was a ripoff but I'm generally very careful with my gadgets and have only ever broken one screen in all my time with glass smartphones (first one being the original iPhone) and that was replaced free of charge.

The sapphire display is fairly durable and highly scratch resistant, but it can't be prone to shattering because of the hardness. Ultimately, I have read very few individuals who actually broke the display. Just as an extra step of caution, just make sure whatever band you're wearing, it's fastened completely to help prevent the Watch falling off your wrist.

Wow, let me just ask you this... how many glass watch faces have you ever broken in your life? My answer? Zero. The Sapphire will shatter from an unlucky drop unto concrete (considering you WEAR this what are the odds of that?) or some horrific smash of your arm into something (that would need to be of the level that you would suffer an injury.) Bottom line? You are very, very, very, very, very unlikely to shatter your sapphire screen.

You know what is likely? Scratching glass on a watch face! You know what is nearly impossible? Scratching sapphire. You bought THE model to be able to bang around and live your life, enjoy the watch! I wore an Apple SS for nearly a year, and later a Garmin Fenix for a year both with sapphire and absolutely ABUSED them. Not a mark, nothing. Glass would have been trashed. I'm going back to an AW SBSS 1/1/18.

Enjoy what you paid extra for!

Why would you want to wear it in the shower?

Well it’s waterproof to 164 ft and can handle surfing and ocean swimming so it will be safe. Apple warns against soap etc. but I’ve worn my AW S0 in the shower countless times with no issues and my Garmin Fenix in the shower everyday for a year. It keeps the bands and watch clean in an easy way and it’s one less thing to take off and forget to put back on. Nothing wrong with taking it off for the shower I just personally think it’s totally fine leaving it on.

I was watching a Youtube video where the person was wearing their watch in the shower. I thought that was odd as well. Residual soap and shampoo would have stay on the watch.

Good point regarding residue. I never put my SS S0 anywhere near water (I know it was only water resistant). I just wiped it down occasionally and it stayed pristine.

The water is actually good for the watch. It helps clean up gunk built up on the digital crown which helps prevent it from sticking from time to time. This usually is the case after sweat accumulates from workouts. I wouldn't worry about soap unless you're directly putting it in the crown, it rinses away fairly quickly. Nothing to worry about. PLUS, it cleans that sport band and Stainless Steel quite nicely!!

I wash my watches occasionally under the sing faucet. I use a little hand soap and water. It gets all the grime that accumulates on the bottom of the watch off 100% and I do the same with my bands. Water and soap won't hurt it this way.

install an ARMORSuit screen protector on the glass and never worry again, i installed it on my Series 2 Stainless Steel for a year now and its protected the watchface for sure on multiple occasions

You realize Rolex, Omega, Patek, Lange, Richard Mille also use sapphire. It’s a proven material. Your Apple Watch cost less then the crystal on many of the above mentioned watches. But yes Apple care is a good investment.

Apple actually recommends that you don't expose the Apple Watch two lotions, soaps, performes, etc. Which can affect the water seal the membranes of the Apple Watch.

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204522

"Keep your Apple Watch clean and dry. Soaps, cleaning products, abrasive materials,1compressed air, ultrasonic cleaning, and external heat sources can cause damage and shouldn't be used with your Apple Watch. "

Thanks Benz! I have been doing research on Amazon and I will most definitely be picking one up.

I agree with you Otfyer

Wow, I didn’t realize some people shower with their watch! If my workout is light, I usually just run my band under water and rub it with my fingers then take a towel and give it a good drying. If it is a heavy workout, I’ll use soap and give the band a good scrubbing - though usually the watch part I’ll just run under water only.

That's actually exactly what Apple recommends. To clean the digital crown, you can run it under the water and rotate the crown to remove any debris. Then you dry it with a cloth.

We have gross hard well water. The amount of minerals and sediment in our water has taken a toll on our tubs, toilets, sinks, dishwasher, etc. Even with the use of a water softener, the problem is still persists. I don't think I would feel comfortable showering while wearing my AW3 in our situation.

I grew up in Iowa and my grandparents in Northeastern Iowa had the same thing - well water that tasted so heavily of iron and all the water faucets showed it. As a kid I loved it because I associated that water taste with vacations and going to the grandparent's house (a farm). But yeah, I wouldn't let that touch the watch.

Here in California the water is a bit better. :p

This Is a valid point. Hard water can be really problematic long term. Especially given the Apple Watch, I think you're making a good decision by not exposing it to hard water all that often.
