7200RPM usb drive: usb bottleneck?

Someone just told me that there is probably no reason to buy a 7200rpm usb or firewire external drive because the usb / firewire will likely create a bottleneck well before the the drive speed (unless you're dealing with tiny files)

Is there any truth to this?
