Washington DC reception

How is the reception in Washington DC?

I read the old threads, but thought that an update was in order. Do you get service in the metro now?

I am currently on verizon, but really want to switch over to the iphone. If the reception is terrible, I may have to stay on Verizon and get the Blackberry Tour when it comes out.

However, the iPhone is my first choice.

Coverage is pretty good. You'll have ZERO coverage underground in the Metro. I think VERIZON has the market for that. Hopefully, AT&T will work on that.
 
General D.C./NoVA coverage is good, although Verizon pips it by a bit. Verizon, though, has a monopoly on Metro coverage.
 
I lived in DC with an iphone for a year and had very very good coverage. Couldn't really ask for better, actually - pretty much full bars at all times. You're not going to get anything on the metro though - that's verizon only.
 
It's decent and 3G coverage extends far into the suburbs.

There are a few holes in some areas but that's to be expected of any network.
 
No serious issues for me. I really don't have any more dropped calls then I had when I was on Verizon. AT&T have also really done a good job in pushing their 3G service into most of Maryland/Northern VA and even out to WVA in the past year. They really have been doing a good job in constatly expanding their coverage in the area.

The only issue is the lack of service in the Metro tunnels. I thought I heard at one point Metro was going to allow expansion to other networks down there but who knows when that will actually happen.

Yeah, and I'd heard that because of some anti-trust deal they couldn't just have Verizon in the Metro lines and were working on fixing that. Looks like it might be a reality in 2012, if that article is to be believed!

Hey, that's where I work. I highly recommend you drop by Elevation Burger for a bite while you're there. They do a rather good patty and if you're a vegetarian they've got you covered.

Try Five Guys for a more hardcore burger experience. :)
 
I visited DC last summer, and with my Edge iPhone, I had full service everywhere. Museums, metro, everywhere...except it did go out in the Archives, but the camera still worked in there ;) I actually remeber being very impressed with how great service was all around DC.

It could be a little better. That said, I've had a load of issues in the last few evenings. I've had dropped calls and at one point, no 3G or EDGE from Merrifield to Burke, VA. All GSM calls. I was wondering if AT&T have been working on their cells recently in that area.

I'm also not convinced that OS3.0 GM was/is as good as 2.2.1 for calls but I have no real evidence to back that up.
 
Any word on the tethering capabilities in the above stated areas? I'm at the Hotel George the last few days of my trip and I'll need to call them to find out if they have WiFi, b/c they don't have it listed on their website.....
 
Are you referring to tethering with the iPhone? On AT&T that won't be officially out until sometime before the end of summer.
