What do you guys think of the possibility of a 27" iMac? Apple seems to be leaning away from the 20" model (as they did with the 17"). 30" would be too big, but 27" seems reasonable.

Not necessarily. The 17" MBP used to have less than 1920x1200 (I forgot what) and they increased the amount of pixels on the same size screen (resulting in higher ppi). I'm sure there are 27" LCD panels with higher res than 1920x1200.
See, (it would be hard) you could cram 2560x1600 into 27". The 24" iMac has a 1920x1200 res. The 17" MBP has a 1920x1200 res. Both the same resolutions, but the MBP's screen is 7 inches smaller.
Apple tends to use 'standard' sizes and resolutions. There are Sony 18.4" monster laptops that are 1080p, and Sony also have their 10.4 machine that runs at 1680x1050 or something ridiculously dense. Apple keeps it simple. Plus Apple isn't a huge fan of high density PPI in consumer products. *points to 15" MBP* well that's a 'pro' machine, but still case in point.
What is the problem with a 30" model? If you crammed a 2560x1600 display into a 27" screen, it might be hard to see things on the screen.
The 17" MacBook Pro's screen is the same resolution as the 24" iMac because the MacBook Pro is a laptop and is designed to be operated from a close distance, so the user is able to distinguish between things on the screen, even if the display has a high resolution.
The iMac is a desktop, and is designed to be used from a not-so-far distance, so they put lower resolution displays in them so you can easily see things on the screen.
To be honest, how many people could actually afford a 30" iMac that are in the iMacs demographic... It would be like trying to sell a Mac Pro to a preschooler.
There will always be those people...for instance, I've got a 4-core Nehalem MP being used by Mum in the kitchen for websurfing.
I would get that 30" iMac if they had a touch screen, now that would be a machine to look up recipe's from!

That would suck to have to navigate by hand through a 30" screen. I don't see why everyone wants touchscreen, they suck in my opinion.

I agree. Everyday Touchscreen Computers are like the Flying Cars. Sounds cool, futuristic and neat but proper execution would just be a mess.
I think the Kindle would be a perfect accessory platform to become a touchscreen book/tablet. Think electronic book, not touchscreen computer.

I sometimes dream that apple will announce a imac pro, 28 inch all silver chassis with a processing frequency of 3.2 ghz (more than likely the i7 quad core) 8gbs of ddr3 ram (with an option for 16) and a track pad built into the keyboard. Oh and the keyboard is full sized with the numeric functions being accessible through the track pad... Oh and both the keyboard and mouse are new forms of wireless technology that enables them to work without batteries... And the mouse takes the shape and texture of the ipod touch.. basically the ipod touch with specific mouse duties.. Then i wake up only to realize that I'm late for my job at Rattegen's Radical Rotisserie (don't ask) and that i should have pursued MIT and not screwed around in school so many years.... Man i miss sailor moon!

I think the 27" will not have that much of a buyers demand, and apple will wonder about production costs with this model because it may not be that popular. 24" is pretty much large for a desktop... If you start getting real big, the iMac will need to be well equipped - with a discrete GPU and better CPU, and nonetheless pile up the cost.

touchscreens are just a poor purchase!
The MOUSE is a beautiful thing. Nothing will ever truly take its' place.

I was right! 27" iMac with a 2560 x 1600 display! Now it's 2560 x 1440, but only because they switched from 16:10 to 16:9
Wow, this was a really funny thread to read. Thx for updating it. Just goes to show... no one really knows anything in advance.
