Hi everyone!

Recently bought a 17" uMBP (matte) and I absolutely love it!

I just wanted to check two things though.

First - well it gets quite hot! Playing WoW I was looking at temperatures, and the CPU/GPU reached 80! It never really went above 80 C as the fans kicked in and took it down a little bit - but is this right? 80 C seems quite high?

Secondly - iStat is telling me my battery health is 98%. Sure that's high... but this MB was bought on Saturday, shouldn't it be 100%? :p

While I'm not worried about anything breaking (I've got AppleCare until 2012) it would stop me worrying about anything overheating (having spent £1800 on the thing!)

Cheers guys!

If you search through the many other battery threads on this forum, you'll read that battery reporting software is only accurate to within a couple percentage points. If you calibrate your battery on a consistent basis you have almost nothing to worry about.

Also, there is some variation between batteries. There is no way to make every battery exactly 100% when it is new.

Right, but what's the tolerance? 17" MBP batteries are supposed to hold roughly 12800 mAh. When my new MBP 17" arrived last week, iStat reported 91% battery health. I calibrated it, and at 2 cycles it was at 12350 mAh with iStat maxing out at 94% health. I tried calibrating it again, but I still can't get over 94%/12350 mAh, and now after 6 cycles it's down to 11980 mAh. Would such a battery be considered a dud or is it within spec to have ≈95% battery health out of the box?

I don't know what tolerance Apple allows, but I have heard of them replacing someone's battery that was at 98% out of the box because that person complained (unnecessary, IMO). 91% or 94% sounds low, and I imagine Apple would give you a replacement battery if you take it to them or call Apple care, as long as you have not had the computer too long. They might not want to do it at first, so you might need to talk to a manager.

106 degree Celsius CPU

i got a 3 month old mbp and my cpu temp went to 106 degrees Celsius! i checked it on 3 different programs... and the fans were running @ 4000rpm

all i was doing was an cs4 ps automation.

this is seriously wrong

any tips as of what i should do?

The temperature is digitally reported by the computer, so no matter what program you use, they should all report the same thing.
