Hi, I believe I have found a bug or incompatibility between iTunes and iPod software regarding the use of a filter in a smart playlist.
Here's the difference:
Thus it seems that what works for iTunes does not work on the iPod and vice versa. Therefore, if you want to filter on a tag being empty such as Album, you have to explicitely combine both requirements in an OR-relationship, like so:

- in iTunes, if you want to select tracks where the Album tag is empty, then the filter must be Album = "" (empty field), something else does not work.
- on the iPod, if you want to select tracks where the Album tag is empty, then the filter in iTunes (copied to the iPod) must be Album = "Unknown Album", something else does not work.
