Mac OS X Partition Failure Input Output Error

The hard drive in my Mac crashed recently so I have installed new hardware and need to format the internal drive to re-install Leopard. But when I try to either erase or partition the drive from Disk Utility, I get the Partition Failure : Input/Output Error message. Can anyone provide any advice on a fix for this or is it a OS error that I can't get around?

The most likely cause of the error you're seeing is drive or cable failure.

Check partitions options perhaps?
