In another thread on Harpertown, I read the following...

Stressing four cores is tough enough most of the time, making the argument for eight at the sacrifice of price, power and noise is a difficult one."

The issue of stressing the cores aside (this was written with gamers in mind), I was a little concerned to read a suggestion that noise was sacrificed significantly in the jump from 4 to 8 cores.

If this is true, given my needs, I may go out and purchase a 4-core 2.66 today.

I've got 6 of my cores loaded with SETI@home, with exhaust fans running twice it's original speed using SMC FanControl with ambient at 32°C, they are audible in a quiet room, but my fan table is even louder than that.

Loaded fully on 8 cores at air-conditioned 28°C with fans about 100rpm slower, it's hardly barely audible.

Love my Mac Pro.
