8 vs 16gb of ram

I asked previously if I should update my 2013 MBP and decided to pull the trigger. Now I'm debating if 16gb of ram is necessary? I'm getting it for basic work and possibly using it a future coding camp(and possibly coding job after the camp). Is it worth the extra $200 for extra ram?

I mean, Apple shouldn't even sell any computer in the 4-figure range with 8 GB of RAM anymore, IMO.

It's like 8 GB of RAM instantly devalues it, regardless of use. I wouldn't buy anything with 8 GB RAM in the back half of 2019, but I'm sure the people who said nobody would ever need more than 2 GB of RAM are about to pounce on this post too to now say the same thing about 8 GB.

Think of it this way. If you keep your MBP for 5 years, do you think 8GB RAM is OK in 2022, 2023, 2024 etc? Also when Apple do make 16GB the base spec it will devalue the used 8GB model prices quite a bit.

I'm looking at the Dell Precision 7740 for my next laptop. I was planning to get it with 32 GB of RAM. It can be upgraded by the user to 128 GB. I wouldn't buy anything with as little as 8 GB today. But I have some software that uses a lot of RAM. I do hope that Apple increases the RAM limits to more modern amounts as they've done on their iMacs and Mac Pros.
