80% of Drive partitioned at "Free Space"

A friend has 80% of the drive formatted as "Free Space" He cannot access it and we can't find a way to delete the partition.

he effectively has 100GB available. I tried to change the partition to OSX Journaled. But it doesn't stick.

Any assistance or pointers?

Can you resize the existing partition to take over the free space? Give this a look.

If you are still stuck, go to the partition tab in Disk Util and post a screen shot up here so we can take a look.
