ok so im very new to ichat ..just got my aluminum powerbookg4 for college...and well i love ichat and have discovered that there is no profile option for aim..now ive been surfin the web and found this sight where you can download iProfile 1.2 which is supposed to allow you to create and maintain an aim profile through ichat...now i was wondering if anyone has downloaded this program and if it works...for those of you who have not found the sight it is: http://www.smashsoft.com/iprofile/ well so if anyone is knowledgeable please reply!!! having no profile is a nightmare and id like to stick with ichat =)

try proteus

I just started using Proteus (shareware), and I LOVE it!

www.proteusx.com

I found that Adium and the Mac version of AIM didn't feel very Mac-like. Proteus, however, does. The colors / animations are rad. When you get a new message, a little red dot w/a number (depending on how many new messages you have) shows up on the icon in the dock ... okay, hard to explain, but it's the same thing Mail does!

Oh, and my favorite thing: it supports iChat-style bubbles :)

Anyway, yeah, try it.

EDIT: Sorry, I should have mentioned that Proteus supports having your own AIM-style profile ... it's built-in, so you won't need iProfile or anything like that. I've used iProfile w/iChat and it works fine, but iProfile has to start up to "publish" your profile every time you sign onto iChat.

i have tried adium, fire. .. something, AIM and iChat, and iChat has still been my favorite, despite the lack of profile. ill probably try your link tonight when i get back home from work (im on my 'break' right now). for me iChat rocks b/c i actually use the audio and occasionally video chat, which i have never seen work so well on any program. but, second to iChat would be adium, im pretty sure it supports everything of AIM (profiles etc) er actually i dont think it allows file sharing. i dont know, its been a while. iChat rocks!

Adium does support file transfers, but I think that may have been added to it fairly recently, because they're sometimes questionable. I personally prefer adium, but if you do audio/ video chatting, then ichat is probably best.

I'm enjoying Proteus a lot, especially the "foreword to telephone" away messages. No animated gifs or "mobile" icons (what's so hard about making those??) but for straightforward messaging, it's nicer than iChat.

does Proteus support file transfers?

Under "File" there's an option called "Send File." I'm guessing it should work fine, but I have no idea since I'm behind a big bad firewall.

I'm surprised that I haven't read much about Proteus ... it seems to be a happy marriage of AIM and the Mac OS. Maybe nobody pays attention because it's Shareware ($15)?

Anyway, I think it's great, but I just started using it. Maybe an experienced Proteus user knows the answers to some of these questions?

I'm a fan of Fire because it acts very mac-like (though no iChat "speech bubbles :( ) and supports both MSN and AIM...therefore I don't have to have two programs at once. It hasn't crashed on me. Supports profiles and file transfers.

well maybe not. . . i tried to find it but the website doesnt work . . . even version tracker points to the same non-functioning website. . . oh well, ill live w/o a profile some more (cause i like the audio/video chat of iChat :) )
