Just bought a new HP 2709m monitor for my late 2009 2.53ghz, 4gb RAM, 320HD Mac Mini. I got the wireless keyboard & new Magic Mouse. Overall I am very happy with my setup because I saved over $700+. I know it's not an iMac, but I am very happy with it. Picture quality is very good for the price.

I know a mouse pad is silly but I don't want to scratch up the nice aluminum bottom. :D

the monitor is 16:9 with 1080p so it fills up the screen when watching Hulu HD.

If you don't mind me asking, whats the approximate price you paid for the HP 27" moniter?
Cheers.

Ben

PS: nice setup.
I'm a sucker for the quad core i7 otherwise I'd be tempted to go your route, $700 is a fair amount of money! Enough for another computer for the wife! But i want the i7. sorry wife :(

More pics. Look at the nice Hulu HD video. Sorry for the poor iPhone pics. Can you tell I am real real happy?

Interesting!! I will be wanting a monitor for my Macbook Pro soon, and I really
like yours! That is a way good price too. Nice. I will be needing a bigger monitor for Photoshop reasons. 1280x800 just won't cut it in design school.
LOL

Nice work! Think of all the things you can buy with the $700 bones you saved :)

I agree. I LOVE the Apple monitors... just don't love the price. My only luxury is my Macbook at the moment (thank Jeebus my college gave me it), I couldn't imagine slapping down the dinero for a big Apple monitor. Would be worth it though.. but the HP looks to be a great alternative. I will probably be getting one soon. 3ms, 1080p.. nice. Bet Modern Warfare looks crisp on it!

Yeah, why pay extra if you don't need the resolution/dedicated graphics/faster CPU.

What did you decide to do for speakers?

It looks like a nice setup, although I think that the resolution would be far too low for such a big screen. I had a Hanspree 27inch @1920x1200 and it was a bit too low res for my tastes.

Wow, 1920x1200 spead over a 27" screen just sounds bad. I'm using an acrylic Apple Cinema 23" which is 7 years old and running that same resolution.

Actually, that HP screen resolution is just 1920x1080 - completely pathetic for 27" screen.. My 24" Apple LED has higher resolution - 1920x1200.

27" iMac screen is 2560 x 1440, so it has almost twice the pixel space of the HP screen. There should be no comparison between the 27" HP setup and 27" iMac.. As they say - you get what you pay for.

Looks nice. But this is where I think the base 21.5" iMac really looks good which is the same 1920x1080 res as your HP monitor. Getting that Mac Mini 2.53GHz, 320GB HD is $937 + $350 for the monitor. The iMac 3.06Ghz, 500GB HD is $1199 and has a better ISP monitor with SD card slot, video camera, speakers. The iMac is such a good value I don't think the Mini can compare at all. You didn't saved $700, you spent almost $100 more than the iMac.

But you do get the 27" monitor which is amazing for watching Hulu and bigger is nice for watching Hulu. I spent all weekend doing that on my 27" and I know how awesome these 16:9 screens can be. Resolution isn't as important when Hulu is streaming 480p.

My main purpose was to watch TV and browse the web. If I did any video or photo work I would not get this. Since even Blu-Ray is only 1080p there is no reason to pay more for higher resolution.

Yes I could have got a 21" iMac but that's too small for my needs coming from a 22" Dell 16:10 monitor. A 27" iMac will cost me $1781 out the door (with my Apple discount). I save a lot by going this route and I can sell the monitor when I want to go BigGeR :D and still have the Mini for something else, can't do that with an iMac.

Hey at $349 for the monitor it's almost disposable. :)

What did you decide to do for speakers?

I got a pair of Edirol pro-studio monitors. Not sure if you can see it in the pics. They ROCK!, for $80 shipped. :)

That's all good, but I wouldn't call it "savings".. as if somehow you got a similar system as 27" iMac for much lower price. Your setup (particularly screen / video aspects of it) is substantially lower end as compared to 27" iMac.

If your HP 2709m + Mini system serves your needs - great, but in the end you got what you paid for. ;)
