I'm looking to upgrade the harddrive in my pre-unibody Feb 2008 MBP. I mostly just need more space, but I do a lot of photoshop work and run parallels often, so any increase in performance is welcome. I've read nothing but good reviews on the Scorpio, but, like the drive it would be replacing, it's only 5400rpm. The Momentus is 7200rpm, but in the research I've done, quality and noise seem to be issues. What would you recommend? Does 7200rpm yield any noticeable performance gains? Are there any other 7200rpm drives of similar size and price that are better than the Momentus?

other things to consider are battery life and heat issues.

i decided on the scorpio blue 640

Scorpio Blue is great drive. In some benchmarks it even beat some 7200rpm drives so I would definitely get it.
