Convert .avi to view on Dvd/divx player - complications

Hi,

I've burnt a few .avi files onto a DVD and I'm having problems viewing them on my DVD/Divx player.

I can view the files on my computer, but not on my DVD/Divx player.
I've never had this problem before.
Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks.

.avi is a container for lots of codecs, most prominently today are Divx and Xvid, MPEG-4 codecs.

To figure out what codec you're using, download Movist and open the .avi file with that, then press CMD+Option/Alt+C and select the Properties tab.

It says that the codec for the video track is xvid. The codec for the sound track is mp3.

So your DVD player seems to be unable to play Xvid encoded videos.

Xvid is a free codec (kind of underground), contrary to Divx, for which you have to pay and which is legitimate.

Either you can update the firmware of your DVD player to be able to read Xvid .avi files, or you need to convert them to Divx encoded videos.
You should be able to do this by downloading the free Divx codec and using MPEG Streamclip as the application to do the actual transcoding.

I'm trying to convert the files.
I choose the divx option, but when I'm testing it out, the codec is dx50.
Is that the same thing?

I typed dx50 into google and the first hit seems to imply that dx50 is Divx 5.0.
