Hi all,
New here but have been reading for a while
I recently bought a late 2008 quad 2.8Ghz Mac Pro V 3,1 and during the setup
discovered that it had a second empty processor slot.
I found that Apple wanted around £760 for the processor and about £180 for the matching heat-sink .... OUCH !
So I researched the correct Intel Xeon chip ( 5462 ) and picked up a used but
working one from Ebay for £129
My local Apple repair centre could not supply the Heat-sink, as I had not bought
the processor from them ... so I had to find one and eventually got one from VIZ in the UK.
I found a service manual on-line and went through the procedure yesterday.
I took my time and completed it in about 1.5 hours, I really couldn't have done it without the tips and photo's from the service manual !
The hardest thing was getting to the damm heat-sink hex bolts. which are
buried over 10cm down through very tight access, even with most of the Mac
in pieces on the floor !
Anyway, got it done and it worked on first boot
Just wanted to share my success and "joy" at managing to NOT screw my
'puter and ending up with a very reasonable cost "monster" machine.
cheers,
Marty.
