Based on a suggestion by user joro, we have increased the bytesize limit for avatars by 50%, effective immediately.
Old limit: 20000 bytes (19.5KB)

New limit: 30000 bytes (29.3KB)
As before, avatars can be up to 75x75 pixels, must comply with all forum rules, and should not be offensive or overly distracting. It's a courtesy to other members to limit animated avatars to slow or infrequent motion.

Avatars, the pictures next to posts, reflect forum participation. They are available to users with 500 or more posts in counted forums (user title "macrumors 6502a" or above). Any registered user can have a Profile Picture that appears on their user profile page. Users who support MacRumors by buying a paid membership are rewarded with suppression of front page ads, access to the private forum, and a special user title, but must still have 500 posts to use an avatar.

From the FAQ:
Once you reach 500 posts, you may not immediately be able to upload an avatar. The privilege is added automatically when the forum system does routine processing, so check again in a few hours. The delay is normal, so please do not contact us to report it as a problem on the same day that you reach 500 posts.

You'll find a helpful discussion of avatars in the GUIDE/FAQ: Hay guys, how do I get an avatar? thread.

User who do not want to see any avatars when displaying forum pages can uncheck Show Avatars in their User Options.

The old limit is fine. Mine is 1044 bytes.

Jpeg or Gif should be in the single digits for something 75x75 sized.

I would hate to see annoying animations.

Um, already seeing more distracting animations.

I decided to start blocking avatars after following the related thread. I've noticed better page load speeds since I turned them off. The animated ones were really annoying.
