Desktop file/folder location reset, how to restore?

I just got my file/folders in the right spot (after 6 months!!), started my iMac up and its reset them all to the right side

Is there a file/system pref I can restore from Time Machine ?

From Finder (Desktop)
View > Show View Options (or command-J, or right click)

What do you have at Arrange By? If it's Name, or any of the other choices below it, then the icons will be automatically shifted to the right side of your screen, and "sorted" according to that criteria.

Change it to Snap to Grid, then rearrange the icons. They should stay put now.
