An octopus's garden
Unfortunately, I don't have all the equipment I need to test this out so I'm asking here: I have a displayport to dvi adapter for my MBP and I also have an older dvi to vga adapter. If I connect the two together would I be able to display on vga-based projector (without causing any damage to the adapters or my computer)?

Thanks!

It won't break anything, but it also won't work. The DisplayPort-DVI adapter is DVI-D, meaning it does not include the optional analog part of the DVI signal. You'll need to get a DisplayPort-VGA adapter (which is more than just a rearrangement of the pins; apparently they actually do some sort of in-adapter conversion).

If you don't want to pay Apple $29, there are 3rd party ones available on the web for a little less (I got one for $20 at Meritline that worked fine).
