I'm really tempted to get an ipad, and now I'm trying to jusify it. I'm keeping track of how often I use my iPhone for tasks that will be replaced with an ipad. So far, i'm quite surprised by how often I pull my iPhone out around the house.

It's kind of like the guiltless shock you get after wrting down a log of what you eat during a day.

If you use your iPhone around the house that much then the iPad may be for you.

Oh and I think two eggs with two pieces of toast would be good for breakfast. You should also try and take a bathroom break about 2 hours after you start work, keep your blood flowing through your legs and of course drain the wiener.

Come back later and I'll help you decide on lunch.

If you have money to burn then buy an ipad but in my opinion if you already own an iphone then theres not much reason to shell £400+ on a bigger version of somthing you already own.

The Ipad wont replace your Iphone because its not capable of making calls and dont fit in your pocket, It also wont replace a laptop because its lacks features, like usb, card reader, multitasking, storage, ram ect...... Some people are hoping that multi tasking will become avaliable in os 4.0 but its just been discovered that the ipad only has 256mb of ram which is the same as the 3gs and half of the HTC Desire.(UK)

I would wait, theres plenty of competition coming in against the ipad (have a look at the gemini) and we all know that rev2 of the ipad wont be that far away and will include SOME but not all of of the features rev1 is missing.

It's so amazing how Steve's reality distortion field works:
RDF is the idea that Steve Jobs is able to convince himself and others to believe almost anything with a mix of charm, charisma, bluster, exaggeration, marketing and persistence. RDF is said to distort an audience's sense of proportion or scale.

Don't try to justify a purchase of a product just because it looks attractive - buy it only if you need it.

I won't put a snarky comment up...you're posting history shows you're not a troll trying to start another "..but it doesn't do this.." thread. (Like so many with this subject line).

The biggest reason I got the iPad was for the exact reason it was made...as a 3rd type of device. I have a desktop, a laptop, and an iPhone. Nothing wrong with them. I planned on using this as an 'around the house' device and a 'coffee shop' internet tablet. It works just fine for that. The netflix app was fortuitous since we use it a lot on the XBOX and our laptops. Still working my way through the apps. I can see I am going to need a 'Pages' hint book...anyone know of an online help site? Which is funny because I thought I would breeze through since I use office all day long at work. My wife says it because I am old and set in my ways...nah..can't be  .

The 'internet pad' concept is it's strongest selling point. I have wi-fi everywhere I need to use it. If you are on the fence and have the extra cash...get the 3g. It's a real value added feature if you don't have access to free wireless and a great selling point (just hate that upcharge...then again I wish I could afford an AMG...except for that upcharge thing :p) Oh well, companies have to make thier nickel somewhere and it's not a subsidized feature for Apple so I understand it from a 'business out to make money' concept.

The app store is starting to get some purchase worthy programs. I can tell there's bound to be some shake-ups coming. I love playing Civilization : Revolution on my iPhone/iPad. The 'updated' version is $7 (which isn't much) but you just get a bigger view. No new features. It also has some bugs (V1.0) so i'll wait. The '2x' version is super clear anyway...no jaggies. This is one of only a few games I have ever purchased. Bejewled 2 is awesome on the iPad. Again, '2x' isn't jaggy at all. I have also seen a couple of 'file handling' apps that just got approved, which will give you better control of file movement. There's several database programs which I can see being a great data entry setup for a business.

The photo app is great...but...I use a Canon 5D and have REALLY big files. The 'optimizing for iPad' is slowwww...need to find a batch converter that works without having to have the iPad in Sync mode. (Had initially selected about 6100 pics...would take 4-1/2 hours to convert and sync..Yoinks!). Looking into that. The 300 I put on for grins and giggles look great. You can blow them up to crazy size. Haven't played with the faces/places yet...just got into work.

iTunes is the same-same as every other 'i-product' it connects to. I purchased a few movies and they work just like the videos. Nothing groundbreakingly different..but that was the point...sameness of experience.

The virtual keyboard was kicking my butt at first...then I figured out what I was doing wrong (you don't 'rest' your fingers on it...you 'hover type') but now I am clicking right along...nowhere near the speed I can type on a regular keyboard but wasn't expecting that anyway. I bought the small Apple BT keyboard just in case..paired it easily and you can type as fast as you want on it. Small complaint...'TAB' key doesn't work. I have already submitted feedback to Apple on that. C'mon guys...that's nuts.

The internet is fast and even on poor (one bar) G connections it still works fine. There has been some mention of having too many pages open causes video screen reloads. Guess, I am not a power user. I usually only have 2-3 pages open at a time. Haven't had a problem. I haven't been selecting which sites to go to and haven't run into any where I have had any problems. My brother played with it and immediately said his favorite porn site wouldn't work  You have to know my brother. He has a warped since of humor.

The biggest "holy crap" moment has been the battery. I can easily get 8-10 hours and still have a charge. I am used to companies claiming 5 hours and only really getting 3 hours (read the fine print...no email, no internet, screen to 10% brightness, hook up the external 10 'D' cell battery pack...etc). Last night I put on everything..mail, internet, video, bluetooth, and 100% screen brightness. It drained it 2x as fast as my normal setup but after 3 hours still have 61% left..which would give you 6-7 hours CONTINIOUS use. Still not bad since most people won't use it in this mode. 100% screen brightness is BRIGHT...I can go sit outside at night with the screen on 10% and read it fine.

In the end Jessica, I don't know what you want to use it for...I like your idea of watching what you use the iPhone for. That's a pretty good idea. My old eyes  have a hard time reading the iPhone sometimes...not a problem with the iPad.

PM me if you have any specific questions...I'll answer you as best I can...

Cheers!

Jay

Jessica,

yes, it doesn't have USB ports or HDMI out. It's not a laptop. It doesn't have a desktop OS. It's not a desktop. It doesn't make calls or do video conferencing. It's not a phone.

The tired argument of "..but it won't replace your desktop or laptop.." is just noise. It was NEVER marketed to do that. The anti-apple fanboys or "anything but Apple" haters keep trotting this out. If you want it do that..DO NOT BUY IT. That's not what it was designed to do. It's never been claimed to do that. Watch the videos. If anything you COULD say it's positioned to compete with Netbook Tablets (Lenova S310) or E-Readers (Kindle or Sony). I have a Kindle. I like both it and the iPad. They both have their place...if I want to sit outside in bright sunshine I will use my Kindle (though it is possible to do this with the iPad the Kindle is 1000x times better). Inside, and especially in dim situations the iPad easily walks away from the Kindle. The Kindle does have whispernet and 'limited' 3g for life. You'd have to get the 3g iPad to have it...but it is a full 3g experience. So..you'll have to decide. I really do like my Kindle. I fully expect some version of the Kindle (small one) to be around for a while at a reduced price point. The Kindle DX can not compete in the current form...we'll see if it goes away or Amazon decides to do "something different".

I already talked about the up and down sides of iPhoto. For me, there is NO WAY I could use the iPad as my main computer. I have to have a desktop or fairly robust laptop. However, if you using a point-and-shoot 8-10 megapixel camer you could probably easily get by with it and a few inexpensive apps. This is the same thing if you are working on 5000 cell spreadsheets or hundred page documents. I have had to create them...and I can tell you..doing them on a laptop or netbook is not enjoyable either. When I have to do anything like that I use my nice conformal MS keyboard hooked to my heavy duty workstation in the office.

Jessica, just go play with one. You may love or hate features completly opposite of me. You may love they virtual keyboard from the get-go or hate that you favorite flash-powered porn site won't work (kidding!!! See earlier post). It's your call...just don't let any Apple Haters OR Apple Fanboys make it for you. Either way, you'll wind up dissapointed...

Cheers!

undrpsi, I'm not looking for answers and you must be reviewing someone else's posting history because I've yet to make any such comment that would imply, directly or indirectly that the iPad doesn't so something. I think you best step back and get your facts straight about the person you are directing your mini rant to. It is interesting to me that you took so much time to counter a statement that did not yet exist in this thread until you jumped in.

The OP is asking if he should buy something. My response, snarky as it may be, was serious. If you can't make a simple decision such as whether to shell out $500 or more on a luxury device then you certainly don't need one. However, if you find your iPhone is being used throughout your home more so than not, then the iPad may be for you.

I do not believe I've commented on USB ports or HDMI out. Frankly, I care about neither. It is not laptop, I never said it was. I don't want a 10" ****ing phone, I have a phone. Your tired post and your decision to call me a troll is absurd. Again, I compel you to get your facts straight before you write against something I've said. If you'd like to counter and show me my post history that speaks to the iPad, USB ports, desktop OS, phone capabilities, and HDMI out then I urge you to get on it.

FWIW, I can help plan your day as well ... just like the OP. We're fairly close in distance, perhaps I can deliver you a hard copy of such plan and I'll print my 30-day post history to help you figure out my view on the iPad. :D

If everyone adhered to this, Apple would have gone belly up about 20 years ago.

IPad isn't something anyone should need to justify. No one needs one. You've got to WANT an iPad, and if you want one you should just go get one. Think no further about it, for if you do then you don't really want one.

Woah...put down the coffee and back away. I wasn't being snarky and if I came across like that I am sorry....I was actually trying to be nice and write a very detailed paragraph. When I hit "quote" after your comment it brought u up as the OP. Yeah, should have made sure you were..so..I'll just remove your name and insert the OP's.

Wow...all I said was "your posting history shows you are NOT a troll" I am sorry if I was wrong..wait...yeah..that was what I typed, just checking.

I'll go back to my coffe now...I drink decaff...

I have an iMac, Macbook Pro and iPhone.

The iPad fills the void of not having to open
my laptop when I want to surf the net and
reply to email which is a bit cumbersome to
do on the small iPhone.

....and perfect for air traveling either for book
reading or watching a movie without having
to put a 17" Macbook on my lap disturbing
the passenger next to me. With a battery
life of almost 11 hours I get more viewing
time out of it than a laptop.

The only shortcoming for me is this damn
WiFi problem that many are experiencing.

I liken it to trying to justify a large flat screen tv when the 25 inch you have works just fine! Many perfectly good 25 inch tv's have found their way to the spare room and basement, while the unecessary new large flat screens have taken their place. Imagine that.

I have 2 Ipads in my home now, and it is a great device. No regrets here ( none yet anyway)

Being 49 years of age, I normally use reading glasses when I use my iphone for web browsing, but I don't need them for the Ipad. That in itself makes it worthwhile for me.

I would like to have an Ipad to, but just cant justify it. The thing is, if you want it, buy it. You are not going to justify it. so just go for it

I have an Ipod Touch, and then had to have an Iphone, couldn't stand being without the connectivity all the time. Wifi only just didnt work for me.

I kinda see the Ipad as an over grown Touch. The 3g model would be nice, but feel I am handing AT&T enough money. If only you could bluetooth tether it to your iphone, to use that data connection.

so bottom line if you want it, jsut get it, and stop thinking about it

i have decided that I dont want it that bad. Plus its usually better to wait for the second generation of anything.

Don't torture yourself. If you want it, and you can afford it then get it. If you can't afford it then don't buy it.

It is not an essential device that allows you to do something you can't do now. It simply lets you do some things that you can already do better.

Life is too short. If you want it get it. If you can't afford it then wait. It will get cheaper with time.

No, but I am working on mine at work now...going to use it as a virtual catalog / price guide. We have already figured out the outside sales people can load targeted information for varied customers before they head out. We are looking at keynote, but in my field (plastic fabrication) it's a more visceral market...they like to play with our parts (hahah...wow...that sounded funny).

But, I can see how this could easily replace (not kill) an outside salesman's laptop. Our people use them because trying to show a customer something on your phones screen doesn't work. With the laptops..it's just a lot more lugging for a visual display. We were looking at Netbooks but I haven't had good experience with them (Dell)...The HP's and Lenova's are good...but they are almost as much as an iPad. (and let's face it...I AM a fanboy so I am biased)

Think about what you really need. A house, food, drinks and maybe some love. The rest are just things that are nice to have. The iPad is one of those things. It will make things more enjoyable so get it if you can.

I went to BB yesterday and played with one for 20 mins. I was on the fence about it. They had plenty still available in all 3 versions.....

I went home without one , dont need it , dont want it.

Maybe next year when they actually offer more bang for the buck and lower the prices.
