I spoke to a Customer Service Specialist at Apple Corporate who seemed very nice and eager to help answer some questions regarding the 2 MBP's I ordered. (Both with 512GB SSDs)

I asked him if he could ask a Technical Specialist what the model of SSD 512GB drives would be installed in the new MBPs. After about 12 minutes on hold he came back to say that Apple works with quite a few proprietary manufacturers for the drives, but did mention the only specific drive the person he talked to thinks is going in is the Toshiba THNS512GG8BBAA.

I will post pics of one of mine when I receive my systems. I just thought I'd share this info with you folks.

If this is correct then the new 2010 macbook pro's feature the new Toshiba HG2 SSD Drives, which have recieved well reviews and have not had the degraded problem of the previous drives used in the 2009 macbook pro's.

I suggest reading this article if you are at all interested in purchasing the Apple SSD upgrade: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1230/1/

The article compares many drives to the HG2's, like the Intel G2

Main question I have is, are we able to update the firmware of the SSDs that Apple includes... or what we get is final.

Since SSDs firmware generally have room for improvements, most of the ones on the market have user upgradeable firmware.

As for the Toshiba HG2, from what I gather, some of the lower performance is due to the energy saving nature of the drive. Maximum draw is about 0.5 watts. (Intel's G2 has max draw of about 1.8 watts)

this is good news, it may not be the fastest but compared to regular 7200rpm hdd it's still night and day. And for only $180 upgrade on the 120GB ssd, it's well worth it.

as soon as i decided not to wait for ssd, news came lol. looks like i will be getting the ssd upgrade afterall

This is for the 512gb one, how about the 128gb, does anyone know ?

It's PROS not PRO'S. You are not talking about something that belongs to a pro, e.g. (A pro's camera is expensive.) You are talking about multiple MACBOOK PROS.

Do you get it? Can you print this out and give it to your English teacher? Obviously they haven't taught possessive vs. plural in schools since the inception of the internet.

I will hereby be pasting this every time I see this error. I fear for the life of my CMD+V keys.

It bugs me too, but there's absolutely no need to be a jerk about it :p

Hijack, cont'd...

Or for that matter, it might just be "MacBooks Pro" (a la "Attorneys General").

:D

Thanks so much for this post!!!

Now I can pull the trigger on the 512GB version. I had not planned on Apple releasing a 512GB SSD option so I was going to get 2 256gb SSDs and RAID them together, but if I can get a 512GB SSD from Apple that is maybe not the very best, but still good, keep my apple warranty, and keep the optical drive, then woohoo! I will be ordering ASAP!

hey beast could you post the brand of the 128 gb preconfigured ssd on this thread so all of us can know what it is when you get it? thanks a bunch!

also...the ssds in the 13 inch mbp should be the same ones in the 15 inch mbp right?

I was thinking of pulling the trigger on a new MBP, but then I just got an SSD for my existing one. It is a Kingston SSDNow V+, which is apparently the same as the Toshiba SSD's that Apple puts in new MBP's. They're no speed demons, but they're really decent drives. Well worth, in my opinion, getting it from Apple and have the entire machine covered under their warranty (and later AppleCare). Just out of curiosity, I checked the Windows experience index while running Win 7 under Fusion, and the score for the drive was 7.1 Not sure if it has much validity, but if it does, it is not a bad number.

Isn't Toshiba shipping the HG3 units already? (Yes, I know, Apple would be more likely to use the older units, but would love to hear the opposite here...)

I doubt we'll ever know; it doesn't seem like anyone is brave enough to order one.

I ordered the 128GB drive for my 17". I'm assuming that Apple uses the same model/manufacturer for all 128s on all the MBPs? I'll let you all know what's inside...
