Video Editing...Which Macbook Pro 13"?

Ok so I'm thinking about getting a Macbook Pro 13" to do some video editing on. I'm not interested in the 15" due to portability. I hook my 13" up to an external monitor anyway.

Which is the better 13" to get?

The previous model with these specs:

MacBook Pro 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
13.3-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display
4GB memory
250GB Hard Drive
8x SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
SD card slot
Built-in 7-hour battery
NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
Illuminated keyboard

OR the

I'll be using Final Cut Pro and Motion and/or After Effects.

Both are okay.

It depends on what kind of footage and what kind of effects you want to throw at it.

The newer model might be better due to the updated GPU, which is needed in Motion and AE.

If portability is important, it's nice to travel without the ac adapter. So the 10 hour battery gets my vote. Also the better graphics card, although it doesn't matter for Final Cut, may matter for other programs in the future. Make sure you get an external hard drive for your footage.

I'm in the market for a 13" Macbook pro and I do video editing with FCP and motion graphics using Motion or AEffects. I use an external monitor, but a 15" mbp isnt an option due to portability.


Should I get the previous model with the following specs?:

Thanks for the update. I searched for over an hour yesterday looking for the original thread and couldn't find the original post so I thought it never went through b/c my internet window was closed.

I don't think that the 13" screen size is very productive for video editing. I have a 15" and sometimes I wish it was larger.

However, unless you plan on doing a lot of editing, either one should work just as well. Any 3d rendering (Motion, After Effects?) will be faster on the 320m, but will you be doing a lot of 3d rendering where it's worth the price premium?

Just remember it won't get anywhere near 10 hours of battery life if it's used for video editing.

Yeah, I'll be using AE and/or Motion. Thanks for the help everyone-I will probably get the newer one. I usually hook my laptop up to external monitors too for editing.

Yeah, Apple battery time advertised has never been the reality for me. I'm thinking a 10 hour battery is more than likely a 4 hour battery in real life which is still an improvement.
