So is it cheaper to do $180 8GB memory for 15 inch macbook at the start? Or is it cheaper aftermarket upgrade?

Aftermarket

I picked up an 8GB kit from Fry's for $89 right aftr I picked up the new Pro from BB today. Installed it in about 5 minutes.

I know this is a noob question but is there anything you can do with the 4 gigs that you took out? Like have apple buy them back?

No, Apple won't buy them back. You could try to sell them via Craigslist or eBay, but I doubt you'd get much for them. Most would rather buy new RAM, with a warranty.

Use Crucial. They're not the cheapest, but I think they're one of the most dependable aftermarket RAM companies.

Yes, that promo makes that RAM look very tantalizing. So how is it? Reliable and safe? I hear sticking bad ram in your laptop is a lot worse than chucking in a bad HDD/SSD.

According to the reviews it looks like it does, I ordered it for my new MBP i7.

I'm a little leery of this RAM. Some of these reviews report problems using this RAM in mbp 13'' from 2009 and 2010. The G.Skill responses in this review are directing people to their "apple specific" DIMMS. Anyone have info on the discrepancies? The majority of reviewers with imacs, mbp 15/17 say they have no problems, but others report problems.

Aftermarket is only about $70 once it goes on sale. You just have to keep your eyes open.

Well the problem here is that 13" 2010 did not accept 1333Mhz. If they did their research they would not have run into this problem. I specifically had to skip 1333Mhz ram deal to get 1066Mhz ram for my 2010. Now that I have the 2011 MBP, this 1333Mhz should work fine.
