8x burning?

I have a new 15" Powerbook with the 8x superdrive. I bought some Maxell 8x DVD-Rs, but neither Toast or Finder will let me burn faster than 2x! The drive model is Matshita DVD-R UJ-845E. I'm thinking the brand name of the Superdrive accuratley describes what it is. Anyone know what's going on? Thanks

Edit: I had a 4x Memorex DVD-R laying around, that will let me burn at 4x. But I'm not thinking the Maxell discs are a problem because I can burn at 4x on my PowerMac (the PM only is a 4x drive)

Hi, your drive is going to be a picky one about discs. Try Verbaitum or TDK and also make sure the discs you buy don't give a 1-8x rating. If some drives/media are given a choice it will almost always burn at the lower rate (if it is a fussy drive). If not it will burn at max all day long.

CD-R/Ws aren't this picky though, are they?

No and isn't that a kick the only trouble I've ever had with cds were from Memorex and those were the printable ones.
