Fan always running in i5 2.4?

My previous 15" late 2008's fans would only kick in periodically, not from start-up and then never stop. Also my mid-2009 13" MBP's fans hardly ever kick in (it has an SSD, not a HD).

My new i5 MBP's fans run at 2000 RPM from wake/start-up to sleep/shut down. Just wondering if this is the new normal or my machine needs a tweak.

I'm not pleased to read that... Getting mine tomorrow, also 15" i5 2.4... so I'll write back as soon as it arrives :)

AFAIK, it's normal for the fans to always be running at 2000 RPM (idle). At least that's what iStat has reported on the various 15 MBP's I've owned over the years.

I remember using SMCFanControl (or whatever it was called) to change the idle speed from 2000 to 2500 on my first gen MBP (Core 2 Duo 2.16GHz) because that machine ran so hot!
 
I have the same MBP, the fans are loud enough to hear in a quiet room.

Its nothing excessive though, its more like a bit of a whisper than a noise.
 
The fans idles on 2000rpm on my 13", and on my MBP classic too.

They might make a little more noise on the new model but nothing new that they are running from startup.
 
Can anyone verify if the fans have changed? maybe by part number or ifix it guide? have they gotten bigger? i know they have gotten more numerous (2009 =2 2010=3) have they gotten larger in size also? maybe that would explain it being louder.

Excuse my logic but if the fan setup remains the same, in the same outer unibody design, then the residual noise should remain the same also.
 
Yes, both fans constantly run at 2000 rpm (and up to 6000rpm under heavy load), it's the same at my 2008 uMBP. I have a SSD, too.

I have the mid-2009 2.53GHz 15" MBP which one has one fan I believe (as it doesn't have the discreet graphics) which always idles at just under 2000RPM... You can hear it if the room is deadly silent but apart from that I can hardly hear it at all.
 
didnt the mid 2009/late 2009 macbook pros have 2 fans? Istat always reported two fans :S

The ones with discrete graphics chips have two fans, the ones with the integrated graphics (9400M only) only have one fan. Well, I presume it's only got one as iStat on mine only shows one fan... :p
 
Idle fan speed has always been 2000rpm on every Intel based Apple notebook I've owned.

I can't hear them until they start to speed up to about ~3500 rpm. At 2000 rpm the whir of the hard drive spindle motor is far louder than the fans.

3 fans? I gotta see a picture of that. I never heard of that. I too would like to know if they redesigned the fans for the 2010 update. However, pictures from ifixit make me think that they're pretty much identical to the 08/09 mbp's.
 
They're always running, but WILL kick into higher rpm when needed..it hit 4k without me touching them. If I've got the laptop in my lap I'll run the fans at 3000 and if its on my bed I'll periodically put them up to 4000 because my CPU starts reaching temps like 170F which I hate seeing I always try keeping it under 150
 
I've just noticed that if you rest your hand on the right hand side of the trackpad, the noise is dampened. It is still audible, but a fair bit quieter.
