To the OP: 1) Yes, Applecare is worth it, well worth it if your computer breaks down, or simply breaks, anytime after the one year warranty expires.
2) You have exactly one year, from the day you buy the computer, until the last day when the one year warranty runs out, and not one day longer to buy Applecare. In other words, you cannot buy it 15 or 18 months after you buy the computer.

In my opinion, it is. Keep in mind that you have a full year to purchase it so no need to decide yet
Yes, it is worth it. Even if you never use it, it gives you peace of mind knowing that your machine is covered for three years if something malfunctions. If you plan to upgrade in a year or two, it will also improve the resale value.
For a notebook, I would if I plan on keeping it for the three years and it would be my primary computer, or planning to resell it to get a new notebook.

think of it as an investment for future laptop replacement. If you're patient enough you can almost always get a free replacement for some minor issues that apple technicians always manage to make worse. I have scored 3 replacements in the past year (a macbook, a macbook pro, and an macbook air). Applecare gives you a 3 year window to make that claim; at just 10-15% of the laptop's cost it's really a good deal.

AppleCare can be a great service, especially if you need small repairs that can be done in-store. Right now I turned in my laptop for repairs through an Apple Retail location. It got sent to AppleCare technicians who I believe replaced the logic board and display that weren't working correctly. If Apple's vendors happen to lose your laptop they don't take responsibility for it. Apple shipped my laptop back to me; however, it got delivered somewhere else. Now their vendor and Apple cannot find my laptop.

I bought AppleCare when I bought my iMac and Time Capsule last year, because when you have two items on the same invoice, the AC covers both of them. The AC is more for the Time Capsule (these things are spotty) than the iMac, really.
If you're going to buy AC, get it for two things, to make it worth the money.

it is definitely worth it no matter what.
i bought a first gen macbook pro and it covered my dead batteries on that it also covered it when the casing got damaged and warn. i abused that thing to dead sling it around in a cheep rucksack filled with books etc etc for 3 years and tossing it about.
I've also had 2 iphones swapped out because of apple care.
it also is currently paying off big time for me as i took my imac in a few weeks back as it was kernel panicking on boot. they tracked it down to a fried GPU which was understandable as it was bought in 2008 and has been turned on non stop apart from been put to hibernate when moving it to another area. the GPU card invoice had i not had AC would of been £200. unfortunately this only fixed it temporarily so the problems obviously stemmed deeper. i took it in again a week later as i had it working for about 6 days (again non stop usage) and they said that they will try the logic board and ram (so by this point they have nearly replaced all the internals to try and fix it) i get a call 48 hrs after taking it saying that basically as it broke within less than a week of the first fix and because i was a student in the middle of university and the repairs hadn't worked so far they are now replacing my entire machine 24" imac with a shiny new 27" model with equivalent option choices as i had chosen when i bought it. i thought this was great service and as i had maxed out all the specs when i bought it I'm hoping that when they say equivalent options they mean that if i chose option 3 on my 08 model they will use option 3 on the current model so I'm really happy bout that.
so yeah i would definitely say AC is worth it especially if you use and abuse your gear till you have ran it into the ground
