It refers to a connection error to iTunes, usually via USB. To fix it, use an earlier version of iTunes and do a DFU restore.
so how do I get an earlier version of iTunes? I have tried a few weeks ago.
if it is a usb issue then it could be the dock connector. the phone has water damage on the bottom and the sensor is red but it charges, and connects to iTunes, and will do most of the restore but stops at the end so I was guessing the dock connector was fine. but maybe not.
