Just fiddling with the resolution figures of retina display:
sized to ipad 10 inch screen this is 5mega pixels (2700*1800), which is the resolution of the iPhone 4 back camera... in my view no coincidence. would be nice to see such resolution on update of iPad.

NB Sized to my 24 inch iMac this would be a whopping 6600*4400 pixels which is 30 mp in camera terms. Even a Nikon D3x or canons D1 flagship would not have enough resolution to fill such a screen... (I would like to see the day that such screens are available: 5 years? 10 years?)

Why would you think it's anything more than a coincidence? The iPhone's camera and the iPad's screen really have nothing at all to do with each other.

That sort of resolution on the ipad may be possible but at the moment prohibitably expensive.I would also imagine that a much more power processor would be required to run an ipad with that screen resolution as smoothly as the current one

Though we'll most likely be there in a year or two.

Technology improves and that's why we have updates. I wouldn't doubt the next iPad will have higher resolution and a front facing camera. 2nd generation iPad will be everything it should have been in the first place.
