Speaker / grill on white iPhone upper front panel?

What is the speaker / grill looking thing on the top of the front panel of the white iPhone 4? black iPhone does not have it. Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere

It's the proximity and light sensors. You dont see it on the black ones because of the color.

Yeah, it's been asked many times. It's a proximity sensor. Black has it too but doesn't need a grill because you can't see it on the black one.

A quick search on google or this forum would have given you hundreds of results of people asking the same thing.
