9400m not getting native resolution when connected to ext monitor

I have a mbp (bought in 2009) that comes with 9400m and 9600m gt. I have been using the high performance mode and have no problem connecting it to an external monitor (default 1680x1050). When I switch back to using 9400 today, the monitor cannot be recognized if the resolution is set to 1680x1050. It works with 1600x1000 or even higher resolution, but just not 1680x1050. I switch it back to 9600 and it returns normal.

PRAM cleared but no luck still.

Any resolution?
