Do u hav this problem? I have a mini display port to Hdmi and this is happening Playing back videos on vlc. Doesn't do this with the laptop monitor.

Which resolution does the external TV have and use, and what kind of video are you talking about?
And what exact TV model do you have?
Or try Movist, as VLC is sometimes not that good with HD content.

No problem here. Base Late-2008 MacBook Pro running @ 1920x1080 and watching 1080p content is fine, no stuttering. The hardware is very capable. I would start looking at VLC. I haven't had any problems but others have experienced some problems. Perhaps try to use MPlayer for OS X and see if that helps.
