(now) how to restore from 4.0 with backed up blobs - scroll down for solution

Hi all

Well it finally hit me at the worst time - I had to go to the genius bar for a repair and they did the 4.0 upgrade. I have blobs stored on saurik's server for everything through 3.1.3.

I tried a few things to downgrade to stock 3.1.3 and was finally able to do so after failure with recboot.

So now I have stock 3.1.3 and I have my custom 3.1.3 firmware made.

Going into DFU or recovery yields error 1604 - on two machines, one running iTunes 9.1 and one running 9.2. Tried with the hosts file redirecting to Saurik's server on 9.2 and to apple's server on 9.1 (haven't tried redirecting on the machine with 9.1 but I guess I'll try that next)

I am assuming the issue is the bootloader being updated - is that correct?

Is it possible to get back to jb 3.1.3 so I can roll up to 4 with pwnage 4.0 then unlock (not necessary since I am an ATT customer, but preferred)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm not new to jb, but have never been through a forced upgrade then downgrade.. and I can't seem to get it to take.
 
You are sure that it's the same phone and not a replacement?

If so, make sure that your hosts file contains the following line:

Code: 
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

Then do a shift-restore in recovery (not DFU) mode.
 
Positive, thanks. I'll go try the redirect to saurik's server on itunes 9.1 (I read something about 9.2 not working somewhere)

Did you mean option+restore? Yah, that's what I've been trying, both recovery and dfu - does itunes 9.2 create an issue that you know of?

I downgraded from 4.0 to 3.0 using iTunes 9.2 and a redirect to saurik's server last night. Worked fine as long as I was in recovery mode.
 
3.0 hmm.. I wonder if i need to go lower then move back up.. also I just realized I need to run dscacheutil -flushcache just in case it's still caching apple's server. Or I wonder if Saurik's server is having issues...

I am restoring again to 3.1.3 as it seems stuck now in restore mode... last time at the end of the restore it failed, which is why i had to use recboot...
It's restoring now, so we will see what happens this time.
 
Alright that restore did the same thing, errored in 1015 when downgrading to 3.1.3 (official) with itunes 9.2 and redirecting to saurik's server.

This is the point where I had to use recboot to get out of recovery mode.

Recboot pulls me out of recovery mode..then itunes goes ahead to activate.

I guess the question is - does 4.0 final update the boot room to match newer 3gs phones (I have a launch day one). If so, it seems I'm screwed as I can't jailbreak 3.1.3 with pwnage?

I just recreated the 3.1.3 restore with pwnage - it's unable to put it in dfu for the upgrade too.. :/

Recboot was also required when restoring to 3.1.2... anyone?
 
Alright I got it - for anyone else wondering.

don't use 3.1.3.

here are the steps (assuming you have your blobs backed up)


Redirect to Saurik's server in your hosts file.
Restore iphone to 3.1.2, if you get a fail message use recboot to exit recovery mode.
Build 3.1.2 jailbreak firmware in pwnage 3.1.5
Allow Pwnage to put your phone in recovery by saying no i don't have the pineapple
when it's complete make sure you close pwnage before trying to do the restore.
option click restore and select the hacked firmware on your desktop.

proceed from there to do 4.0 jailbreak as specified by dev team, and then baseband unlock through cydia.

Hope that saves someone some frustration.
 
Hi I tried the method you suggested but my iPhone gets an error still, did you do this in iTunes 9.2 as I did? Pwnage says its not worked when putting into DFU mode but the screen is blank so sure it is in DFU mode? Thanks for your help :)
