Hey! Is anyone aware of an inexpensive alternative to Illustrator? I've been told that Studio mx does similar things...but alas...it is not inexpensive. From what I can tell, the Gimp doesn't help much...are there any open source alternatives? Thanks!

EazyDraw and Intaglio should be similar enough without the more complex functionality or price.

Macromedia Studio MX is a bundle of software.. which includes Freehand MX. it can purchased seperately but i'm not too sure what the price is. Free hand is equal to Illustrator. Kinda like a Adobe vs. Macromedia..

Macromedia vs. Adobe
Fireworks = Photoshop
Freehand = Illustrator

i have something called expression 3. i have only briefly used it but i got it for free but i cant remember how or where from. it looks quite good though!

aah i remember now! its not bad and microsoft are giving something away for free. shock horror!

I use both FreeHand and Illsutrator and Illustrator is the better of the two. I also use Expression and love it as well. But to answer your question fully we'd need to know what your intended use is.

Good point...at present I'm designing a logo by hand, which I plan on scanning and then manipulating to load quickly and to look slicker on-line.

Expression is one of the best I've used and I found quite good for cartoon style drawing (I used it to draw a picture Invader Zim-a character on a Nickelodeon show of the same name )

Roaring Rhesus Monkeys! I want so bad to learn one of these vector programs but I find them so intimidating. I downloaded Expression 3 but haven't tried it yet. Anyone have any tips, resources, or books to recommend?
