uh, I just recieved my new 20 gig ipod and it only has a capacity of 18.5 GB? What's the deal? If they advertise it as 20 and it only has 18.5 then I'm sending it back..this sucks..!!!!!!

Well, when you buy a audio tape, or even a music CD-r, you can fit 60 minutes on a 60 minute tape. Or even video tapes. I think it would be nice if apple could have gone with that standard.
i will say that 4000 songs is a proper number. I don't doubt that you could fit 4000 good quality mp3s on the thing.

It's nothing to do with Apple how much actual disk space is usable on a formatted HDD, it's just how thing are for the reasons that others have explained above.
